Whining…Traveling Rant

I became Starbucks-challenged this morning. It’s early. I haven’t had my coffee, and I’m in a strange city. I turned right on the main drag but didn’t see it. Hmmmm…maybe it was the one I had to turn left to get to? Or, could it be the one I had to cross the main drag and then turn into the shopping center on the left. Crap…I don’t know where the hell I am.

This happens to me when I’m traveling too much. I remember when I had a road warrior job in Seattle and I woke up in the middle of of the night confused about where I was. I turned on the light. It was a hotel room. Surprise, surprise…but, where? What city was I in? I looked out the window. No clue. I didn’t recognize anything. I could not remember where I was. By then, I was in a panic. Where am I? What day was it?I got out my pager (yes, this was awhile back) and checked the date. Then, I got out my planner and looked at my schedule. Oh…yeah…I was 3 days into on a driving tour around Oregon. I was somewhere in Western Oregon at a Doubletree doing training at a Sears store the next day.

Snowstorm driving down from Denver

I’ve been traveling a bit lately. A lot of it is personal and some of it is business. Regardless, I’m on the road. I said I’d never do this again. It was okay when I was younger and didn’t require a lot of sleep. Now, I am militant about my sleep and am getting militant about what I eat. There’s just a lot more maintenance that has to be done to keep a 51 year old body in decent condition. I haven’t been able to workout on my regular schedule, and I can eat out fairly healthfully, but I can’t control how things are prepared. There’s way too much sodium. I’m swollen from the extra sodium and the dehydrating conditions on airplanes. Plus, there are a few other things that just aren’t working right because of the change in eating patterns.

In addition, this trip has been a comedy of errors. It took me 15 hours to get here from Memphis. I looked it up on Mapquest yesterday. I could have driven here quicker. It was my own saga of trains, planes and automobiles. I had to really work to remain present and calm. Luckily, I sleep like a baby on airplanes even though my neighbors have to endure my snoring and drool. But, that’s their problem.

I had hoped to run/hike the Manitou Incline while I was here in Colorado Springs. But, it’s snowing and cold. It’s not going to happen. So, I got a pot of tea last night and went home and painted my nails. Today will be a long day. I train all day, drive to Denver (1 1/2 hour drive) and fly home to Memphis. Hopefully I’ll be in my own bed with my cats before midnight tonight. I’ll definitely sleep on the plane. Tomorrow, I plan to drive 5 hours south to my college homecoming and catch up with some old friends. It’s going to be a busy weekend.

I’ll probably forget where I am when I wake up sleepy. But, I’m alive and well. I’m just grateful I can do this, and I’m so grateful for that little Starbucks app on my cell phone which will direct me to the nearest oasis no matter where I am. Luckily, I’ll catch up with my sleep when I’m dead. Have a great weekend! And, to the Baristas at the Starbucks in Jackson, MS, see you in the morning. 🙂
